But why did I like it? At 1st glance, it looks kind of dark and omnimous. It's of a dude who looks a bit rugged and ruffled from a hard life. And furthermore, it's a piece of art -- not something I typically would spend a lot of time thinking about. None of these are reasons I should take a second glance at it.
Yet, I've found myself returning to that image throughout my time in DC. And yesterday, while watching the clouds float by while lying at Dupont Circle, I realized that in those 2 birds I saw my own feelings. Like this sculpture, my cage door has been opened to let my inner bird soar, but after years of being safe inside of its coop, it is reluctant to fly away. It lacks the heart to explore. Instead, it prefers to linger near the doorway, with bags packed, walking cane acquired, and even a scarf for those cold evening breezes. My bird needs a little encouragement to take its first solo trip into the world.
