Munnar (Part I): Licked By an Elephant and then...

Anyone who knows me, and has access to facebook, has seen a picture of me laughing hysterically while next to an elephant. This was part of my trip from Idukki to Munnar in the state of Kerala. The driver had previously asked me if I was interested in riding an elephant. Of course I would! Who cares if I hurt my foot, that it's swollen, or that I've been suffering from burning hot food for days; when else would I be able to ride Asian elephants in the backwoods of India. Let's go!!

On the ride there, the driver started to share with me various sayings that absolutely cracked me up. For example, what does "wife" stand for? Answer: Wonderful Instrument For Entertainment. Or, if you're referring to her when you've first awaken in the morning: Worries Invited For Ever. Not exactly the politically correct way to refer to a woman, but hey, it gave me a chuckle.

To ride the elephant was 350 Rs (about $14), per person, for 30 minutes. The rider requires that two people get on. As Chris says, there is always a rub. So, Raj was stuck riding the elephant with me, as I shrieked, giggled, and tried not to let my fear of heights get the best of me.

After the ride, I noticed that some of the people were feeding their elephants fruits. Being the big kid that I am, I HAD to give my guy a little treat. He did just lug me around through the mud for a few minutes, afterall.

The folks kept encouraging me to get closer to him so he could easily get the fruit. Sure, these animals are "trained," are omnivores, and are known as gentle giants. But let's be honest, if I gave him something he didn't like, dude could knock me out with just his trunk. On the final piece of fruit, I guess he liked it so much that he wanted to get a bit of the juice of fmy fingers. So, he licked me. Thus, the look you see on my face is a mix between being grossed out and amazed I still had fingers. He tongue was sticky, warm, slimy... I'd imagine it's like what a calm would feel like if you petted it. Giggling and hobbling, I washed off my hands, got back in the car, and began to recount back how cool of an experience it was to Raj. I was also happy I had brought some anti-bacterial wash with me. Who knows where that tongue had been!

Day to be continued later...
