Idukki: Bunnies Better Watch Out

Despite a swollen foot captured from my previous day's adventures, Monday morning Rajesh picked me up from the houseboat and we headed to Idukki. Not knowing anything about the state of Kerala, let alone its districts, the borrowed DK India book from Tripti  told me I was headed inland to hill stations.

I arrived at the Greensberg Resort and was surprised that everyone, and I truly mean everyone, knew who I was. I felt like a foreign ambassador traveling through the countryside or something. Even Arun, the gentleman who brings my room service knew that the night before I had been on a houseboat. Boy, rumors fly faster in India than you can say, "Shazam!"

Prim, the manager at the property, walked me to my room. At first glance, I was taken by the lushness of the property. My room was 112 (where the players dwell). It was a cute cottage with one round room for a bedroom and a second, adjoining, round room for the bathroom.

Prim also informed me that there were rabbits on the property and encouraged me to go visit them. I giggled a bit, thinking about whether there might be a Cyber Bunny in their midst and said I'd love to see them, but first I wanted to unpack, relax, and have lunch.

With those tasks complete, I wandered outside to sit on the porch. There was a really refreshing breeze coming in through the property and I felt my pulse start to slow down a bit. This was exactly what I needed to happen on my vacation. While sitting on the porch, another worker on the property walked by. I asked him where I could find the rabbits, and stated firmly, "No, there are no rabbits." Puzzled, I said, "But Prim mentioned that there were bunnies on the property, are you sure there isn't one I can see?" He shook his head, "No." In turn, I shrugged, said thanks, and sat back down.

Later, Arun, who to my delight brought me afternoon chai, told me that there were indeed rabbits and big ducks with long necks (aka swans). He offered to walk me over so I could take pictures of them.

One of the albino rabbits had recently had a litter. All except for one of the bunnies were also albino. I suspect that that the gray bunny might have been a testament that the albino rabbit mother liked to hop around with different male rabbits, if you catch my meaning. ;)

Later, as Arun and I walked away from the rabbit enclosure, we ran into Prim. Prim told me that the guy from earlier had said I wanted to eat the bunny. Dear Lord! Does everyone think that all we Americans do is eat? Maybe if I hadn't just told the rabbit that it was cute and told the daddy rabbit congratulations, maybe then I could have considered eating rabbit for the first time in my life. For now, those bunnies were definitely  safe from my stomach!

All in all, I highly recommend this resort to any travelers to Kerala who want to relax and 'get away from it all.' I truly enjoyed getting to know the staff members (like Arun and Bijyorn), who humored me by teaching me a few words of malayalam and telling me a bit about the region. It was truly a pleasant evening to get settled after the prior day's commotions.
