Today, I sent the following e-mail to several friends, managers, manager's managers, and co-workers. I was amazed at the reactions it elicited. The responses were quite instructive in how people perceive me, and will stick with me for years to come. For all the good, and the bad.

SUBJECT: Thanks 4 your support
Good morning friends & associates,
As some of you may know, I have been going through a lot of turmoil in the past few months, both professionally with the graduation from TAP as well as the adjusting to a pre-teen move into my home. These dramatic changes have required that I reflect upon the key aspects in my world and assess how I would like to focus my energy in those areas. The introspection lead me to revisit my analytical strengths, recognize my natural tendency towards individual-based tasks, and highlight my desire to be a part of making a difference in our world community.
Thus, with a heavy heart, I would like to announce that I have accepted a position with the non-profit I worked with in Haiti as a Social Program Analyst effective May 1. The position is a two-year post that will permit me to be an active participant in assessing the impact of social programs instituted since the devastating earthquake last year and spend time giving to a community that has transformed my spirit. After 9 years at Capital in both the IT and TAP capacities, I learned a lot about myself, friendship, and humility. But moreso, this company gave me the opportunity to explore both my strengths and weaknesses, and thus grow tremendously in the process.
Many thanks to each of you for the impact that you had on my experience here in LA and at Capital. Moreso, I'd like to thank you for your patience as I pull your leg on this april fools joke. If you've read this far and truly believed that I was leaving California to go live in a country that lacks air conditioning, then we really must get to know one another a little better. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
All the best,
Alaynè Marie Sampson
